Skyboard Ultra replacing carbon fibre in FPV drones
Finnish FPV drone design house and developer Kolibri Defence launches Finnish high-tech innovation, an environmentally friendly wood-based Skyboard Ultra as an alternative material for FPV drone frames to replace carbon fibre board.
Kolibri Defence has developed the Skyboard Ultra in partnership with a Finnish mechanical wood processing company. Made from ultra-thin Finnish birch sheets, the board delivers carbon-fibre-like stiffness for rigid FPV drone frames.
During CNC machining the Skyboard Ultra produces only small wood chips which don’t get airborne and can be simply vacuumed from the CNC machine. In comparison during mechanical processing the carbon fibre board produces tiny dust which gets airborne and is harmful for both lungs and eyes.
Kolibri Defence has conducted thorough material testing for its drone models portfolio and completed its validation processes. The Skyboard Ultra was introduced and the machining demonstrated in the DALO exhibition in Denmark 19.-20.8 and in the European Defence Tech Festival in Berlin 21.8. Validation tests for operational defence use have started in Ukraine and commercial deliveries for various dual-use customers will start in October 2026.
Skyboard Ultra is competitively priced and is cost-wise similar to high-quality carbon fibre board, but providing several other benefits including environmental friendliness and easy and safe machining. Detailed technical product information and pricing will be available by mid September 2026 as well as several detailed demonstration videos.
